Bodies and fires

With such a large 'back garden' its not surprising that I see a lot and obviously follow news stories relating to the surrounding area. Two most notably: the headless and handless torso of a woman found in a large bag was fished out of the docks opposite us - I wonder who she was and how anyone actually contemplates, let alone sets about, cutting limbs, and particularly the head, off a body? I just hope the missing bits don't get washed up on the shoreline for an unsuspecting 'mudlark' to find. The second incident was waking to find the sky over towards Deptford filled with black smoke - this of course was the factory fire which had started at midnight that, not only caused 200 residents to be evacuated to a park in their PJ's, but also caused traffic chaos the following morning. An update on that is that last night (29th April) at around 7.30 the sky was again filled with black smoke coupled with an orange glow at its base. The fire had obviously re-ignited! Sirens could be heard from what seemed many different locations across London - it only seems like that due to the water expanse and the echo I guess. The sky is clear this morning so it is obviously out for the time being!

Dead battery

There is nothing like a dead battery to ruin your day. What is more annoying is remembering when and for what you used the interior light! Why did I not switch it off? Well done AA (thank god for Home Start) you managed to kick start my day except it was 2 hours too late and the momentum was lost. Memo to self - must buy jump leads and spare car with good battery in case of emergency.

Primark

Easter bank holiday Monday - what on earth made me do it? Did I seriously believe only I would think a shopping outing to Oxford Street and the newly opened Primark store would be a breeze? Well let me tell you it was a living hell. Found the store together with my daughter, to our amazement we had to form an orderly queue around the block to get in. Thinking this must be worth it we did just that. On entering the store our eyes fell upon price tags such as £3.00 £4.00 £5.00... all affordable and we both found ourselves caught up in the process of filling our baskets. The queue to the fitting rooms stretched from one end of the giant store to the other - decision not to do that one made instantly, well at these prices you can afford to play hit and miss. We continued to find bargains, anything and everything we considered. Armed with our cheap goods we proceeded to the checkouts, these were as busy if not more than the fitting rooms. We searched upstairs for a smaller queue only to find all were long, very long and snaking in and around the rails of goods. My daughter and I gave each other a look, nothing needed to be said, we dumped the baskets and made as quick an exit as we could via the hoardes. We got over the loss very quickly and I can only assume that the so called bargains we armed ourselves with were a) crap b) not essential c) not worth the aggravation. Never again!!

Easter madness

The sun is shining, the water shimmers but it is still only early April. In the park youngsters flaunt their white bodies in skimpy bikinis in an attempt to start off the elusive British tan - get a grip people -the only thing you will have caught is a chill!

Imagine visiting old friends for Easter lunch...imagine eating al fresco (woolies on)...imagine cheerful children gnawing gleefully on chocolate eggs...imagine smart, freshly laundered clothes...imagine the sound of 'tufff' followed by a stream of chocolate tainted saliva hitting its target...imagine how tolerant one can be! Happy Easter!!

Introductions and explanations

Sound idyllic, don't be fooled, this is not blog from a remote countryside location, however it is magical. The river is the Thames and I have to say the view is spectacular, looking westwards I can see : Tower Bridge; St Pauls; BT Tower; Wembley Arch; Westminster; Big Ben and all other manner of ancient spires mixed together with concrete and glass towers. To the east Canary Wharf stands majestically, together with ever increasing developments popping up all over the island. The daily view across London changes from grey sky to spectacluar sunset. The river itself sits below, a constant ebb and flow of traffic, objects and of course water! In good weather and when its not windy (downside) a glass of wine or a G & T goes down very well.

I moved back to London three and a half years ago from the country where, together with my husband and daughter we lived in an old converted methodist chapel. Our decision to move back to London was based on the fact our marriage was on a knife edge and quite frankly anything was worth a go, even though we were advised against it. Well it worked, moving back has given me some of the most rewarding times of my life and re-invigorated both marriage and our individual lives. New jobs, new challenges, new people, new area, less baggage! We had to downsize to afford the prime position we have, albeit it small, however it is surprising what you don't miss. We were determined that the view out of our window had to be better than the one we had.

The one thing I left behind was my daughter who at the age of 20 was setting up on her own. But joy of joys she has returned! Our spare room is no longer spare and no longer can we depend on hot water from the shower, but I can honestly say it feels great being a mum again. We shop, we laugh, we argue, we joke and of course I worry (getting back late etc). I am lucky - I live with my two best friends!

I am a Deputy Headteacher and am just moving to a new school where another chapter will begin, hence the blog - a good starting point! I have often contemplated writing a diary and regret not recording some of the funnier episodes in my/our life. Now's my opportunity. I can ramble to my hearts content, filling in gaps along the way.

My family is spread across the world, mum and dad in Thailand/Spain, sister in Canada, brother in the next county: hi to you all and special thanks mum for the tip re: blog!! I checked out Wife in the North - great stuff!!
